Drinking this right now as I’m typing this. This is going to be my go-to green smoothie for a while to get this booty back in shape! My detox green smoothie with chia seeds also has yummy pineapple and banana to cut through the spinach flavor, and a little unsweetened almond milk to make it super creamy. This is kind of like my other go-to smoothie, Ally’s Power Morning Smoothie but without the oats and honey. It’s just a LITTLE healthier, with lower carbs and a little more protein from the chia seeds.
Have you tried chia seeds yet? They are basically the superfood from the gods. You should be able to find them in a normal grocery store, but if you can’t here’s a link for them: Food To Live Chia Seeds (8 Ounces)
They’re probably a little more expensive than you were expecting, ($5-$7 a bag) but that bag will last forever. Promise. Just one tablespoon of chia seeds give you amazing health benefits from antioxidants, fiber, a huge energy and metabolism boost, and will keep you full (which is why it’s perfect for a meal replacement smoothie!) You don’t notice or taste them at all, so it’s great to sneak them in like this 😉
Also, did you see my cool little cup? I got a Ninja Blender as a present, and oh my gosh I’m in love. You can blend smoothies directly into a single-serving cup like this one! No more mess, no more pouring. OBSESSED. Find it here if you’re interested >> Ninja Professional Blender with Single Serve (BL740)

Hi Ally, saw this on pinterest. Great site….do you soak your chia seeds first. I usually use flaxseed in my smoothies but not much for chia seeds.
I’ve never soaked my chia seeds! I find that if you let them sit in liquid too long they soak it all up and become like tapioca, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
You will not get Omega 3 from your chia seeds if you are not chewing them.
What kind is substitute the milk for is coconut water ok ?
Yeah, that would give it a nice flavor! I’ve used coconut water before and it’s very good
I can’t drink milk what can I use instead?
Any kind of nut milk, (almond, coconut, cashew) would work. Coconut water or pineapple juice would also be a great substitute

Hi, I’m allergic to pineapple, what fruit could I use instead?
Thanks x
Hi Heather, I love this with mangos or peaches too! The yellow fruits will keep it sweet and maintain the pretty green color 🙂

can you add oats and honey in this one as well?
can you add honey and oats in this recipe as well?
Of course! Try a cup of oats and a tablespoon of honey. You may need to add a splash more milk!
thanks for the instant reply..
How many carbs do u think this smoothie consumes? And I added ground flax seed is that ok ? It tasted amazing. Ty for sharing.
Oooh that’s such a good idea! So trying that. I just typed the ingredients in a nutrition calculator and it says it has 59 grams of carbs (from all the fruit!)
thanks for the instant reply..can you please tell me if I can drink this every day and when should I drink it?
Yes, you definitely can drink it every day! I prefer mine as breakfast, but it could be a healthy snack as well.
Can you omit the banana from the recipe? I’m not a big fan of bananas
Definitely! Actually, I made this this morning and I ran out of bananas. I substituted a cup of frozen mango! Frozen peaches are great as well. Basically any yellow fruit will be a great substitute because it will still come out green and sweet.
will this help in weight loss…and if not what smoothie do you suggest foe weight loss
Yes! I absolutely recommend this for weight loss. Drink this for breakfast every morning. The chia seeds will help keep you full and boost your metabolism. The spinach and fruit give lots of nutrients and are a healthy swap for a traditional breakfast
Do you grind the chia seeds?
Nope!
Hello! Would you recommend drinking this for lunch instead of breakfast?
I love this for breakfast but it can be a sub for any meal!
is the recipe actually for the single serve Ninja cup? Seems like a lot more.
Yes, that’s where I make mine! You really have to pack it in. Might be easier to use a regular blender
Is this a smoothie I can blend the night before and have for breakfast the next morning? How long will it keep in the fridge?
I don’t recommend that because the chia seeds will make it very gummy and thick. However, I don’t have good luck with pre-making smoothies chia seeds or not. They separate and need re-blended. Sorry!
Do you find that you can fit the whole recipe in your ninja blender cup? I also have a ninja but use to run into issues fitting it all into my single serving cup (similar portions to what you just listed) and it always went past the max fill line so I got discouraged making smoothies as it was a pain to pull out the whole pitcher every time.
Yes, I always use the single serve! Agree it’s too complicated using the whole pitcher. I pack the banana and spinach down at the bottom and then fill it the rest of the way to the fill line with mango. It may end up being a little less than a cup, but it will still be good!
Hi Ally. Would you mind sharing with me you carrot ginger smoothie? I have drank you Drtox Green Smoothie and it is delicious; however, not a big fan of the sweetness. Thank you.
Love this recipe! It’s summer in Aus so I’m really keen to try out some new smoothie recipes, I’ll try this out 🙂

Thanks, Julia! I hope you like it too!
Hi Ally,
Thanks for the sharing such a lovely green smoothie recipe. It’s so simple. I’m a big fan of green smoothies. Although my kids don’t like the green taste at all.
Thank you, Donna!!
Hi i love this! Can I drink it for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Or is it just once a day?
I’m glad you love it! I probably wouldn’t drink the exact same smoothie three times in one day, (that’s a lot of bananas!) but you could switch up the smoothies to get different nutrients!
Love love love this smootie…. Simple to make and delicious!!
Thank you!!! I couldn’t agree more 🙂
Hi this smoothie sounds lovely I just have a question most my friends do slimming world and told not to make smoothies as the fruit release the natural sugar im so confused with it all . I love smoothie and not a great breakfast lover I’m desperate to loose weight as I’m going on my honeymoon in June please can you help me I love most fruit apart from mango and love veggies .
Hi Samie! I understand your concern, fruit does have sugar! But if you aren’t eating much other refined sugar, the natural sugar won’t be so bad. If you’re worried, try a more veggie-based smoothie like my Carrot Ginger Smoothie!
Aw thank u . I don’t eat hardly any sugur based foods so I think it will be ok . But I will also give that ago too thank u so much for the reply much appreciated
This is so delicious, thanks for sharing.
I’m so happy you like it!!!
Why is it called a detox smoothie? What organs does it help detoxify, and how? I’m looking for a way to reset my liver, as my fat loss has plateaued and I’m fairly sure it’s a liver issue (although I have no hard evidence other than what else could it be?).
Hi Chrissy,
Leafy greens (spinach!) are some of the most powerful liver detoxifiers out there, and that’s just the beginning of their health benefits! Chia seeds are also an incredible source of healthy protein with antioxidants and metabolism-boosting properties. The more greens you can incorporate into your diet, the better your liver will be! They create an alkaline state within your body that keeps your organs healthy.
I love, love how you add up the calories!
I’m glad it’s helpful! 🙂
good stuff
Can you use regular skim milk? And do you taste the chia seeds? I
Yes, any type of milk will work! And no, chia seeds are tasteless.
Just started a detox and am drinking this smoothie for breakfast and dinner, with a light lunch and light, low carb snack after dinner. I replace my morning coffee with this drink. Several things that I’ve noted. 1) This goes down a lot smoother than my coffee used to. 2) I haven’t had coffee for 4 days now (started Monday July 30, 2018). I don’t reach for that afternoon cup out of habit anymore. I have much more energy in the morning that my coffee was providing, and it seems to extend through the day. On Saturday, July 28, 2018, I weighed in at 190 lbs. This morning, I was 180 lbs. I think I weighed myself after I ate on Saturday, but I’ll still take that number. I’m not tired at all, and as a matter of fact…feel a little bit euphoric at times. 🙂 Monday was hard, but Tuesday I noticed that I slept better and it was a more relaxed sleep. Wednesday was the same. I’ll keep detoxing until next Monday, then start re-introducing regular meals with calm and meaningful portions. I think you’ve gotten me on the right path with this drink, and I truly appreciate it.
Oh my gosh, Kelly! I love the positive scale and non-scale results you’re seeing! When I first starting drinking green smoothies, I swear the blast of nutrients would make me feel “drunk” or euphoric sometimes too. You go girl- keep it up!!! 🙂
Yummy combination! Thank you for sharing this smoothie 😀
You’re welcome 🙂 glad you like!
Just wondering if I could add some plain Greek yogurt. If so, how much?
Definitely! I’d start with a half cup to see if you like it and adjust from there!
Thank you for the quick reply. Trying this smoothie for the first time this morning. From all the great reviews. I’m sure I will love it.
I hope you like it!!! It’s a keeper 🙂

We just made these and it was absolutely delish. Do you know the nutritional values for this? I am diabetic and wondering about carbs.
Hi Peggy! Give me 5 minutes and I’ll post it below the recipe 🙂
I’ve made smoothies before and just couldn’t drink them, I tried this and I LOVE this smoothie!!!
Yay!!! That makes me so happy!! The pineapple really helps ??
Bought all the ingredients today. Trying this recipe tomorrow morning. Can’t wait!!
I hope you like it!! 🙂
One of my favorite smoothies……I didn’t have banana so I used frozen mango yummy!
Such a good swap!! You can’t go wrong 🙂
Could you replace the milk with just water? Can you suggest a smoothie for constipation?
You definitely could! For constipation, you should really try the celery juice trend. That clears you out, haha! Otherwise, I find a lot of greens like this smoothie does help. Ginger also helps!
Trying another frozen fruit? Or cut up fresh fruit and freeze it?
You could do either! It’s very customizable. I always change the fruit
How often should you drink this? Should I eat food with this or by its self?
Once a day at most! And i typically eat this as a meal replacement. Any time of day is fine!
Hi! Is it a packed cup of spinach for the smoothie? I love using spinach but I sometimes put too much.
I usually do one big handful! I know it’s not always easy trying to measure greens.
Hello 🙂 so my goal is to lose some weight, should I drink this every morning? I have heard drinking the same smoothie everyday, your body gets use to it and doesn’t do anything, is that true?
I’m not sure if that’s true, but you should switch up ingredients to give your body different nutrients! I drink it about 3-4 times per week for breakfast.
This is so good!! Made it this morning for my breakfast. Even let my super picky 11 year old try it. His eyes grew 2x their normal size and declared it was so good. Thank you for sharing this recipe!!
Awww I love hearing that!! Makes me so happy 🙂 thank you
Can I use water instead ?
You definitely can, but the texture won’t be as smooth and creamy. To balance that, you could use frozen bananas or a scoop of yogurt.
If you drink this very often what ingredients would you suggest to switch up every now and then? Excited to try this, sounds tasty!
i really wanna try this but please can i add some ginger into it and does it help one get a flat tummy because i really need a flat tummy
Of course! That would be delicious
does it help one get a flat tummy
Can I prep these and throw them in the freezer? Or what do you recommend?
You can! Chop everything up (except the milk) and freeze it in airtight baggies.
I wonder how long I can keep it after blend it? Would like to make in the morning and bring it to work drink it with my breakfast. it took about an hours 15 min from my home to work, is it ok to keep that long ?
Absolutely! I do that almost every day on my own drive in. It will be fine for a couple hours. If you like I really cold, just add some extra ice or keep it in a thermos to help keep it cool
Hi Ally,
Must I will try for my husband but I am a diabetic patient, It will be better for me when I have to take the medicine for every morning?
You have shared us nice information about smoothie with chia seeds. Thanks for sharing.
You label this a detox smoothie. What else do you do thorough out the day?
Hi Ally
Thanks for sharing your experience with green smoothie recipe. I’m a big fan of green smoothies. Go ahead and waiting for the next one.
I love this very much, how you add up the calories!
Hi buddy,
I just read your blog. The recipe you shared awesome. Is your recipe helpful for weight loss?
Can you substitute chia for flax and spinach for kale?
Of course! Smoothies are always customizable
Thanks for sharing it’s really helpfull for me.
Is it ok to drink smoothies for breakfast and dinner to lose weight? Which one would you recommend to substiture dinner? Thank you!
Hi Miriam! Great question. Short answer, yes. Long answer, my overall recommendation comes with a couple points of advice:
1. make sure the two smoothies are very different- different vegetables, different fat sources, different protein sources- to make sure your body is getting everything it needs. I’ll include links to several smoothies of mine that have very different ingredients:
http://allyscooking.com/2018/01/24/beets-and-berries-detox-smoothie/

http://allyscooking.com/2017/06/20/2112/
http://allyscooking.com/2016/12/30/detox-green-smoothie-with-chia-seeds/
2. the smoothie you drink for dinner should be very low in fruit/sugar. I recommend my Extra Veggies Green Smoothie http://allyscooking.com/2019/09/22/extra-veggies-green-smoothie/ as a dinner smoothie.
3. Make sure both smoothies are packed with protein and fat to keep you full and energized. Use protein powder, seeds, plenty of greens, avocados, nut butters, etc.
Hi, thanks. Please i wish to ask, where i am i dont have spinach, which other veggie can i use?
Any green vegetable would work! Spinach is the most neutral tasting. You could do another type of leafy green like kale, or zucchini, spiraling powder. It’s very customizable
what can I substitute for the banana and pineapple as i have a food sensitivity to those items?
1/2 Avocado instead of banana for creaminess and mango for sweetness!
